Warnings with Pinpoint Precision Down to the Street and House Number

In early 2009, e*Message introduced a new civil defence warning module called “e*WM”. Integrated in smoke alarms, the novel device can be activated by radio in case of danger to warn the affected citizens — with pinpoint precision, down to the street and house number. The industry and concerned organizations support an initiative of the German Federation of Firefighters for the integration of wireless warning modules in smoke alarms for private homes. Such alarms could be addressed by paging networks with regional coverage to warn the population in case of disasters. e*WM is one of many innovations developed by the e*Message Group. Here are a few more examples:

2009: At the fourth Extreme Weather Congress in Bremerhaven, e*Message presents its first storm siren. The device is based on the new e*WM warning module, and achieves the necessary wake-up effect at night. The storm siren is being field-tested in cooperation with the Fraunhofer ISST research institute. Depending on the type of host device, the warning information is either acoustic or visual , or transferred to a more complex medium. The e*WM warning module not only works without a SIM and independently of public phone networks — it is also much more precise, more versatile, and more effective in use than conventional sirens. Thanks to satellite communication, e*Message’s national data broadcast network transmits alert messages reliably, even under extreme conditions.

2008: At CeBIT 2008, e*Message presents an electricity rate display in cooperation with EnBW AG. This energy supplier and IBM jointly developed a system that measures a user’s power consumption and informs the consumer of the momentary electricity price. The electricity rate display is a little device for home use that paves the way for revolutionary developments, as it allows private customers to adapt their electricity consumption to the cost schedule. The dynamic display is made possible by data communication over e*Message’s nationwide paging network.

2007: Weather stations by WETTERdirekt revolutionize forecasting by providing weather reports for fifty regions throughout Germany, thus offering substantially more exact information than all previous models. The data is continuously updated via satellite over e*Message’s network at no extra charge. WETTERdirekt is a content provider that transmits the data using e*Motion technology, based on the e*Message paging network. e*Motion is energy-efficient, available nationwide, and well-suited to the mass market, and it provides good indoor reception. The technology is thus suitable to add value to a variety of devices. Its advantages over GSM pay off when the application data needs to be updated constantly. In this case, the e*Message chip and network are by far the most economical option, both in purchase and operating costs. Moreover, the paging network coverage is much better and the power consumption of the receivers is a mere fraction of that of GSM devices. Within months after their launch in Germany, the novel WETTERdirekt weather stations are successfully introduced in the French market as well.

2005: e*Message premieres no less than three novel developments at CeBIT 2005: a new technology, a new user device, and a new partnership. The newly developed e*Motion media platform is an intelligent combination of Internet and broadcast network that distributes current news to selected users and to groups of any size. All news messages are sent directly and can be read at the push of a button. The receiver is either the newly launched e*Skyper live pager (a personal device with a modern look, an intuitive menu structure, high memory capacity and long battery life) or any other device with an integrated e*Motion module (mobile phone, MP3 player, car radio, or almost any kind of clock). Premiere number three: e*Message initiates a cooperation with RTL Interactive and its multiple-award-winning Internet portal “wetter.de”. The partners launch the novel wetter.de e*Skyper pager that delivers 36-hours weather forecasts for all German regions and a number of destinations abroad.

2003: e*Message presents a new device at CeBIT 2003: the e*Portable Palm, an intelligent combination of PDA and pager. The new product, developed in collaboration with Palm Germany, performs automatic updates using the latest information provided by the wireless network. The device unites two hardware components: an ordinary Palm m500, m505 or m515, and a Slyfox paging module.

2002: e*Message announces the world’s first PDA with flat-rate wireless connectivity at CeBIT 2002. Compaq’s iPAQ allows mobile users to stay up to date continuously. The application was developed in collaboration with Peiker acustic and other partners. The same company is also involved in the development of an integrated, interactive push/pull solution for Windows CE.
